Business for me is about solving real problems that exist. There are countless opportunities in the world that are just waiting to be tackled in an intelligent and effective way. The basis for a good business comes down to how intelligent you are at tackling a real problem!
My latest venture is in excursion management. Having worked in outdoor education for many years, I found a significant problem in the effective management of field operations (excursions). What was happening in the field, didn't always get properly reported back to school until a parent was demanding answers for something which had happened. However, as for all my business ideas, they don't come from me sitting at a desk thinking about them. This one struck me in a rather unusual way.

How it Struck Me!
Running a school canoe expedition, I had several students with medical needs. It meant I was carrying action plans, emergency contacts, medication administration forms and a runsheet to record everything!
It was a nice calm summer's afternoon and we were at the end of our 12kms for the day. Paddling into land, I realised two boats had closed in on me, suddenly I heard a noise from either side and I was hit with two walls of water, the kids completely drenching my boat. All my paperwork, despite waterproofing, was totally soaked!
That night, whilst drying everything off around the fire, I realised I’d forgotten to give out a medication… It’d been smudged off the sheet!
It suddenly struck me. I carry my phone everywhere, it's waterproof and I need something to provide me with reliable alerts and reminders so I’d never forget a medication again. Ironically it was the boy who drenched me whose medication I'd missed!
