Challenge, Experience, Growth

Picture

• Without challenge, there's no reward.

• Without stepping outside your comfort zone, there's no experience.

• Without pushing the boundaries, there's no growth.

Leadership in Outdoor Education

Experiential education is the most valuable way people learn. Getting out there and actually doing stuff that pushes people beyond their comfort zones is what I love to do.

Be it in school, business or life, helping people realise that their boundaries are often just self-imposed restrictions is the most exhilarating feeling. I love seeing that Aha! moment when someone finally gets it and through their experience they grow as a person. In my 15 years as an outdoor education leader, it's these moments which have always stuck with me and are the best memories and the most rewarding part of any expedition.

Risk Management & Mitigation

Balancing risk and experience is always the challenge in unpredictable environments. However, my extensive work from the coastline to the alps has given me a great appreciation and respect for the natural environment and I work tirelessly to manage and mitigate risk so that others can enjoy a range of outdoor experiences in a safe and controlled way.

Wilderness First Aid

If you're working in the industry, this is a must! There are a number of high quality courses available in Australia and internationally and well worth traveling for. Being able to treat, manage and sustain a casualty in a remote location is a vitally important skill. However, it's not just about treating someone once an injury has occurred. Wilderness First Aid helps you plan and prepare for a number of key environmental and medical risk factors before you even head out! So if you haven't taken a course, go and do it right now!

Outdoor Ed Blog

I write a weekly outdoor ed blog, which covers a whole range of industry issues, such as risk management, program development and education. I also share stories of random things which have happened out and about on expeditions.

Experiential Education Podcast

We're now into season 2 of the podcast. This continues to be a lot of fun and I've learnt so much from the experience myself. The Podcast is available on iTunes and Stitcher.
